Bilberry

Bilberry is known as the European blueberry. A relative to the blueberry we see in the produce area of our favorite markets. The leaves are used in medicinal remedies. The berries make wonderful jams and jellies. This little shrub has so many wonderful properties – after getting to know it, you’ll want to plant one in your yard! Through its beneficial Tannins and anti-inflammatory properties, Bilberry is great for dysentery and diarrhea. Bilberry carries a pigment that inhibits bacterial growth that is found in microorganisms in the intestinal tract that bring on intestinal illnesses. Bilberry is also known in many herbal practices to increase insulin production in type 2 (*Non-insulin dependent ) diabetes, lowering blood sugar levels when used routinely. Bilberry is also used internally for the health and function of the eyes. It reduces inflammation and protects the cells of the eye, helping with night blindness, chronic strain or tired eyes, cataracts, and certain eye diseases. Use Bilberry for a gargle for throat complaints and mouth sores. Because it will reduce free radicals and reduce inflammation it may be good for supporting the body with certain cancers. Bilberry also is a good tonic to help the liver detoxify in the presence of heavy metals in the body. If you need some cognitive support, Bilberry may slow the symptoms of memory decline and will promote memory and clarity.
