Goldenseal

Hydrastis canadensis

We have the Native American Indians to thank for the ties of this herb and natural medicine. Through the medicine men of the Cherokees, early settlers learned the healing power of goldenseal. It acts through the body much like an antibiotic. Goldenseal is an astringent and is used in very small doses for many complaints. Goldenseal is anti-fungal, Anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, anti-viral and will take care of a host of issues.

Goldenseal is effective against any bacterial and viral infection. It reacts internally and externally to infections. It’s good for skin infections such as rashes, athletes’ feet, and boils. Even as a mouthwash for cold sores, gum irritations, and infections. It comes to the aid for vaginal infections and prepared as a douche can help with yeast infections. Goldenseal helps stop or control bleeding. The Cherokees used goldenseal to cover wounds and plug gunshot wounds in their warriors after the battle. Modern herbalists recommend goldenseal for heavy menstrual bleeding. Goldenseal helps remove toxins in the body primarily in the kidneys and urinary tract. It helps boost insulin production in type 2 diabetes and lower blood sugar levels.

Taking goldenseal internally should be done with much caution. It is very bitter and drying to the body. Taking very small amounts over just a few days is enough. A little goes a long way. Too much of Goldenseal will be toxic to the body. Goldenseal boosts immunity, those with auto-immune diseases are advised not to take goldenseal internally, as it may trigger a response. This herb can also be hard on the stomach and cause upset. Goldenseal is often used in formulas with Echinacea to combat colds, flu, and viruses and mixed with garlic for an anti-parasite remedy. This plant literally lives to be used for medicine, it grows for 3 years, and then dies. During these 3 years, herbalists all over harvest the best medicine on earth. The root is used as a bitter to stimulate bile. The leaves are used as a wash or poultice, the powder is used in an infusion. Goldenseal currently is on the endangered list as it has been overharvested for years. During this time we allow new plants to come up and naturally populate regions once again. Herbs endangered can be expensive and easily out of stock. For an alternative consider Oregon Grape, affectionately referred to as the poor man’s goldenseal!
