Licorice Root

licorice is best known as a candy as it is the oldest form of candy dating back to the early 13th century. Licorice is also found in throat lozenges. Most singers know the healing powers of licorice to soothe sore throat and laryngitis complaints. Nicolas Culpepper, our 16th-century herbalist, physician, and astrologer documented that it “ makes a good drink for those that have a dry cough, hoarseness, wheezing or shortness of breath.” That is due to its anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and demulcent properties. Licorice is also wonderful for the adrenals. It is restorative to adrenals increasing the body’s natural chemical that helps the body recover from chronic anxiety or stress quicker. Licorice is a natural steroid. When licorice is broken down during digestion it has a cortisone effect on the body without side effects.

Licorice can raise blood pressure and water retention in the body. It is not recommended if you suffer from hypertension.
